Missions
Service Opportunities

Abingdon United Methodist Church has many opportunities for service within our Community, and beyond. Listed here are some ways members of our Congregation have become the hands and feet of our Lord Jesus Christ.  For information about any of these missions we support, please contact the church office at 628-2321.

EFIA (Ecumenical Faith In Action) – Once every 6 weeks members of our congregation gather at the Food Pantry to help bag canned food items and to hand them out to needy families in our Community.  Our church also supports EFIA through monthly contributions to help service people who need help.

Harvest Home Soup Kitchen – On the Fourth Wednesday of each month volunteers from our congregation serve hot meals to needy individuals throughout that day at the soup kitchen. The United Methodist Women work every Monday to prepare food for the needy of the community.

St. Andrew’s Potato Project – On the Second Sunday of each month a collection is taken for this organization which provides potatoes to needy individuals and helps the Holston Conference Children’s iniative.

Jail Ministry – Members of our congregation are encouraged to bring in magazines, old devotion magazines or Bible studies that are taken to the local jails for the inmates to enjoy.  Drop off in the church library.

Community Christmas Dinner – We are fortunate to be able to take part in the Community Christmas Dinner for any one in our Community to come and enjoy a homemade, hot meal on Christmas Day. Many members of our congregation are key players in putting this dinner together along with other churches and businesses in Abingdon.  For many years, AUMC hosted this dinner for the community.

Short-term Mission Trips – Members of our Congregation have answered the call for help by donating their time and energy to rebuild houses during recent flooding in surrounding Counties and in other states.

Youth Mission Trip – Each June the Youth take part in a Habitat for Humanity mission trip at John's Island in South Carolina.  Many adults have become a part of their team every year as this ministry continues to grow for the youth.

Benevolent Trust Fund – This fund was created specifically by Abingdon United Methodist Church so that we can assist individuals who have no other aid available to them.

The Social Club – Twice a year our church hosts a dinner for Mentally Challenged Adults in Abingdon, providing them a social outlet. Members of our congregation cook a homemade meal and provide transportation for these individuals.
